Opfer

The dance theater piece choreographed by Ying Xiao is a captivating blend of artistic expression and cultural exploration. Premiered in the summer of 2021 im jungen Choreografen Folkwang In 2022, this work was featured at the prestigious Erfurt International Dance Theatre Festival and also performed at Essen Essenzial. The piece is renowned for its unique blend of traditional elements with contemporary dance, showcasing Ying Xiao's innovative approach to choreography and storytelling. Through this work, Ying Xiao explores themes of identity, tradition, and the ever-evolving nature of art.

Opferis a creative fusion of Chinese Dai dance and modern dance, expressing the contemplations we face under the impact of the pandemic through art. What sacrifices should we be willing to make to return to pre-pandemic life? Do we need to give up certain things in exchange for the freedom we had before the pandemic? The work provokes deep reflection on life, nature, and the coronavirus, offering the audience an engaging visual and spiritual experience.

During the tour, upon receiving the news of the passing of her mentor, Ma Yue, a renowned Mongolian dancer, Ying Xiao made a heartfelt and spontaneous addition to the performance. She incorporated elements of Mongolian dance as a tribute to her late mentor. This impromptu differentiating it from other versions and infusing it with a deep sense of cultural homage and personal emotion.
